4th and 5th Pullout Classes
The HAL program in fourth and fifth grade is a formal pull-out program. These classes meet twice a week for 40-minute sessions each. Students participating in these classes have been formally identified for these groups. Classes offered may be one or more of the following: Math, Language Arts, or Visual-Spatial.
Math HAL
High Ability Learner (HAL) students who participate in our Math Challenge Program study various topics throughout the year. Topics which may be covered, but not limited to could include problem-solving skills, algebra, geometry, team building, probability and statistics, fractions/decimals/ratios/percentages, as well as measurement. Emphasis is placed on mathematical problem solving skills through various units of study. Students in both fourth and fifth grade participate in the national Math Olympiad competition.
Language Arts HAL
HAL students who participate in Language Arts Challenge classes focus on topics such as shared inquiry though the Junior Great Program, novel studies, research, creating book walks, and creative writing. Activities may vary from year to year depending on student interests and needs. Some activities incorporated into these topics may include creating multimedia presentations, literature discussions, and debate.
Visual-Spatial HAL
Students identified for this program will focus on using their visual strengths as they work on different units of study. Some of the activities we will focus on may include the following: creativity, imagination, 3-D work, art, math in pictures, puzzles, and logic.
